Dropping into the Wonderland of Kabuki
If you have some free time in central Tokyo, Ginza Kabukiza is a fantastic spot to explore. This cultural jewel box, comprising Kabukiza Theater and Kabukiza Tower, offers a glimpse into the enchanting world of Kabuki, Japan’s traditional performing art.
Kabukiza Theater’s facade shows a typical Japanese architectural style. On its side, you will find Kabuki Inari shrine, where actors traditionally offer prayers on the first and last days of each month’s performance program.
In the basement lies the Kobiki-cho shopping square, a treasure trove of traditional Japanese small articles and souvenirs, and there is a large Japanese lantern hanged in the center of the square.
Head up to the 5th floor of Kabukiza Tower to visit Kabukiza Gallery, where you can learn the history and art of Kabuki. A small Japanese garden on the floor provides a serene place to stroll.
From the 5th floor, take the vermillion Goemon staircase down to the 4th floor. Along the way, you will have a closer look at the Japanese-style tiled roof of the theater. The 4th floor features a corridor adorned with photographs of famous Kabuki actors from past generations.
Last but certainly not least, for a taste of Kabuki, consider purchasing a Single Act Ticket, which allows you to enjoy one act of a performance, which seems an ideal option for first-timers.
