Watching Morning Practice at Arashio Stable

Arashio Stable, the only Sumo stable in Chuo Ward, is located three minutes- walking from Hamacho Station of the Toei Subway Shinjuku Line.

It is a kind of unique stable in the way that the side of the building facing an alley is covered by wide window pane and you can enjoy watching Sumo wrestlers practicing very hard through transparent windows.

Morning practice starts at 7:30 and lasts until around 10:00 in the morning. At 8:00am, a lot of people flock to the road in front of the stable building. Most of them seem to be visitors from overseas.

The best timing to visit there would be during two weeks time frame before January, May, and September tournaments held in Tokyo as wrestlers push themselves hard preparing for the tournament.

Looking into the practice ring, wrestlers over Juryo division wear white belt or `shiromawashi` and those under Makushita division, that is ranked below Jyuryo, wear black belt or `kuromawashi`.Arashio Stable has three wrestlers over Jyuryo division such as Wakamotoharu, Wakatakakage, and Daiseizan. Wakamotoharu and Wakatakakage are brothers but they are different type of wrestlers in terms of their fighting style.

Because of their different styles, both wrestlers are ideal targets to practice with especially prior to tournaments. Thus, various wrestlers from other stables including Houshouryu, Daieishou, Nishikigi, Oushouma, Aonishiki, Rouga, Kitanowaka, and Asakouryu come and visit the stable seeking opportunities to practice with them.

Watching morning practices at the Arashio Stable through window glasses don’t require any reservation and free of charge. Practices are over around 10:00am followed by “picture sessions”with young wrestlers. Visiting Arashio Stable must be one of the valuable way to spend your time in the morning while you are in Tokyo.
