Pedestrian Bridges over the Asashio Canal
The Asashio Canal, located in Chuo Ward, Tokyo, is a waterfront area connecting the neighborhoods of Harumi, Toyomi, Kachidoki, and Tsukishima. A pleasant promenade runs along the canal, making it an ideal place for a leisurely walk by the water.
There are four pedestrian bridges in this area. For local residents, they are an essential part of daily life, providing convenient access between neighborhoods. For visitors, however, they offer something different—a chance to explore the waterfront on foot without having to worry about traffic. In this article, I'd like to introduce these four unique pedestrian bridges.
Asashio Kobashi
Asashio Kobashi is the lowermost bridge spanning the Asashio Canal, connecting Toyomi and Kachidoki with Harumi.
The bridge's most striking feature is its height above the water. With a clearance of 8.8 meters, it is more than four times higher than the upstream Asashio Bridge, which has a clearance of just 2.0 meters. Looking down at the canal from the top of the bridge, you may find yourself instinctively taking a step back.
The reward for climbing that high is a spectacular view. From the bridge, you can overlook the high-rise apartments of Toyomi and Harumi, see Shibaura Pier in the distance, and even spot the Asashio Floodgate upstream. It is one of the best viewpoints along the canal. The night view is equally impressive, making it well worth visiting after sunset.
Reimei Kobashi
Located just a short walk from Kachidoki Station, Reimei Kobashi connects the Kachidoki and Harumi. Opened in 2024, it is the newest bridge spanning the Asashio Canal.
Its white structure features a contemporary design inspired by gently undulating waves, supported by numerous slender columns. The bridge's light, dynamic form blends beautifully with the surrounding skyline of modern high-rise buildings, making it a new landmark along the canal.
After dark, the bridge is illuminated with blue lighting, creating a completely different atmosphere from the daytime. Reflections of both the bridge and the surrounding buildings shimmer on the water, making it an excellent spot to enjoy the canal's night scenery.
Triton Bridge
Triton Bridge is a pedestrian bridge located just upstream from Reimei Bridge, connecting the Kachidoki with Harumi Triton Square.
Its most distinctive feature is that the entire bridge is covered by a roof. Rather than feeling like a conventional bridge, it resembles an enclosed pedestrian corridor. Covered pedestrian bridges of this kind are quite rare, giving it a unique character.
The roof provides protection from both the intense summer sun and rainy weather, making the bridge comfortable to use throughout the year. It is also equipped with moving walkways, allowing pedestrians to cross with ease. Combining practicality and comfort, Triton Bridge is a fine example of urban pedestrian infrastructure.
Sakura Kobashi
Sakura Kobashi is another pedestrian bridge located upstream from Triton Bridge, connecting the Kachidoki and Harumi.
Its slender bridge deck and clean, understated silhouette give it a refined appearance. Free from excessive ornamentation, the bridge blends naturally into the surrounding cityscape and complements the waterfront environment.
Rather than serving as a tourist attraction, Sakura Kobashi plays an important role in the daily lives of local residents. It improves pedestrian access between Kachidoki and Harumi while creating a seamless connection within the waterfront area, contributing to the pleasant atmosphere of the canal promenade.
